About
The oxeye daisy is one of Britain's best-loved native meadow perennials, instantly recognisable by its large, classic daisy flowerheads with broad white rays around a flat golden-yellow centre. The dark green leaves are spoon-shaped and toothed at the base, becoming narrower and clasping up the stiff, upright stems. Plants form spreading clumps and naturalise readily where conditions suit.
It grows in meadows, field margins, roadside verges, embankments and rough grassland on a wide range of well-drained soils, in full sun or light shade. Flowering from late spring through summer, the abundant blooms are an important source of nectar and pollen for bees, hoverflies, butterflies and many other insects. Easy to establish and long-flowering, the oxeye daisy is a backbone species in wildflower meadow and grassland seed mixes, giving the bright white sheet of bloom that defines a traditional summer meadow.
