This tussocky grassland wildflower mix blends fifteen native species for moderate to high fertility, circumneutral soil under low-input management. A single cut a year in spring, or one every other year, is usually enough to keep the sward tussocky: the tall, undisturbed structure that shelters overwintering invertebrates, small mammals, and in turn the barn owls and green woodpeckers that feed on them.
The BFS13(F) mix is a tussocky grassland wildflower blend for sites where the goal is a tall, undisturbed sward rather than a manicured lawn: rough grassland margins, estate parkland, wilder corners of amenity sites and habitat creation schemes. It suits moderate to high fertility, circumneutral soil and matches the NVC habitat MG1 grassland type.
Suitable NVC Communities: MG1. Sowing Rate: 1 to 2g/m². Contains: Wildflowers 100% (15 species).
Cutting once a year, or even once every other year, in spring is usually enough to maintain this sward. Leaving some ground uncut and rotating which areas get cut each year helps small mammal populations and overwintering invertebrates establish. Undisturbed ant mounds are a common feature of this habitat and can attract green woodpeckers, while the small mammals give barn owls, a Schedule 1 species, somewhere to forage.
