Phoenix Pro-Bacter: UK-manufactured organic lawn fertiliser with Bacillus and Trichoderma

Phoenix Pro-Bacter is a UK-manufactured granular lawn fertiliser containing live Bacillus bacteria and Trichoderma fungi alongside its organic-based feed. The bacteria break down thatch and dead moss in the turf as they work, without the black staining that comes with conventional iron-based treatments.

How it works

Phoenix Pro-Bacter works differently from the iron-based treatments most groundstaff know. Rather than dosing the turf with sulphate of iron, it combines a granular fertiliser with two naturally occurring biological agents. Once applied, Bacillus bacteria start breaking down organic matter in the turf, including thatch and dead moss, and convert it into nutrients the sward can use. At the same time, the fertiliser feeds the grass plants directly, so roots strengthen and the grass thickens above ground.

Thatch and dead moss breakdown

Thatch is one of the most common causes of poor turf performance. It blocks water and nutrients from reaching the roots and creates the damp, compacted conditions moss prefers. The Bacillus bacteria in Phoenix Pro-Bacter decompose thatch and dead moss in place, turning them into organic matter the soil can use. You are left with a cleaner, more open turf profile: no need to rake anything up, and no black staining on paths or patios.

High potassium formulation

The 20% K2O content is what sets Phoenix Pro-Bacter apart from standard lawn fertilisers. Potassium strengthens cell walls and helps the grass plant regulate water and hold its colour through dry or stressed periods. A lawn with enough potassium develops thicker, more resilient growth.

Active biological agents

Phoenix Pro-Bacter contains two biological agents. Bacillus is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that decomposes organic material, including thatch and dead moss, and cycles the nutrients back into a form the grass can use at the root zone.

Trichoderma is a beneficial soil fungus that colonises the root zone. It supports root development and helps the grass plant make better use of the nutrients already in the soil.

No sulphate of iron, no staining

Conventional iron-based lawn treatments can leave black staining on paths, patios and other hard surfaces, and often need raking up once the moss has died back. Phoenix Pro-Bacter contains no sulphate of iron, so neither of those problems apply. The bacteria break the moss and thatch down where they lie, without leaving any residue behind.

Application

Apply Phoenix Pro-Bacter at 100-114 g/m² (1,000-1,140 kg/ha), from March to late October. Avoid applying during hot, dry spells: it works best when the turf is damp or rain is forecast. Leave the mower boxes off for 2-3 days afterwards, so the granules have time to settle into the turf.

Phoenix Pro-Bacter is not suitable for turf cut below 10mm.
