Agrimony is an upright native perennial of the rose family, instantly recognisable by its long, tapering spikes of small yellow flowers, which give rise to its old country name of church steeples. The pinnate leaves are divided into toothed leaflets and, like the stems, are softly hairy.

Agrimony is an upright native perennial of the rose family, instantly recognisable by its long, tapering spikes of small yellow flowers, which give rise to its old country name of church steeples. The pinnate leaves are divided into toothed leaflets and, like the stems, are softly hairy. The five-petalled flowers open in succession up the spike through the summer, and are followed by small, bristly, burr-like fruits that hook onto fur and clothing to spread the seed.
It grows in dry to moderately moist grassland, on hedge banks, road verges, woodland edges and rough field margins, generally in sun or light shade and often on lime-rich soils. The flowers attract bees and other insects, while the foliage carries a faint aromatic scent. Long valued in herbal traditions, agrimony is a graceful, easy plant that adds vertical structure and a long season of soft yellow to meadow and grassland seed mixes.
