Achillea millefolium L.
Bloodwort
Yarrow is a tough, aromatic native perennial of the daisy family, easily known by its soft, finely dissected, feathery leaves and flat-topped clusters of small flower heads. Each head has a few short white (sometimes pink-tinged) ray florets around a pale centre, and the many heads together form a broad, flattened plate of bloom on a furrowed, slightly downy stem, usually around 40 to 60cm tall.
About
Yarrow is a tough, aromatic native perennial of the daisy family, easily known by its soft, finely dissected, feathery leaves and flat-topped clusters of small flower heads. Each head has a few short white (sometimes pink-tinged) ray florets around a pale centre, and the many heads together form a broad, flattened plate of bloom on a furrowed, slightly downy stem, usually around 40 to 60cm tall.
It thrives in a wide range of grassland, from meadows and pastures to verges, banks and lawns, coping well with poorer and disturbed soils in sun. Flowering from early summer well into autumn, its open, nectar-rich heads are an excellent landing stage for hoverflies, solitary bees, ladybirds, lacewings and many other beneficial insects. Hard-wearing and long-flowering, yarrow is a dependable component of meadow seed mixes, wildlife borders and tapestry lawns.
