Rock Rolls
In stock
Rock rolls are flexible, rock-filled geogrid tubes for erosion control and bank stabilisation on UK rivers, lakes and coastal sites. They interlock and conform to bank contours to dissipate wave energy and resist scour, and stay permeable so water can move through rather than build up behind them. Suited to riverbank protection, culvert outfalls and SuDS schemes. Get in touch for specifications and a quote.

Rock rolls are flexible, cylindrical erosion control units: angular rock or stone aggregate packed inside a UV-stabilised geogrid or mesh sleeve. Phoenix Amenity Supplies rock rolls across the UK for bank stabilisation, scour protection and revetment work on rivers, lakes and coastal sites.
What are rock rolls?
Each roll is filled with dense, angular rock or stone aggregate and encased in a high-strength, UV-stabilised geogrid or mesh. The rolls interlock and conform to the ground they sit on, so they follow bank contours rather than fighting them, while still carrying enough mass to hold their position. Unlike a rigid revetment, a rock roll can settle and adjust as the bank moves underneath it without losing its protective function.
Why use rock rolls
The dense rock fill gives each roll substantial weight and surface friction, which dissipates wave energy, reduces scour and helps stop wash-out along riverbanks, lake shores and coastal margins. On riverbanks, estuary edges and canal embankments, rock rolls add structural weight quickly, which helps prevent slumping and improves the stability of the bank where it meets the water.
The open structure lets water pass through the roll instead of building up behind it, so hydrostatic pressure does not undermine the structure the way it can with solid barriers. Over time, the gaps between the rock fill can also give small niches for aquatic invertebrates and, in suitable conditions, support some vegetation establishment.
The rock fill and casing are non-biodegradable, so rock rolls hold up well over a long service life with little environmental degradation. Because they are relatively straightforward to install and do not need frequent repair, they can be a cost-effective choice for erosion problems that would otherwise mean repeated remedial work.
Typical UK applications
- Riverbank protection
- Lake shoreline stabilisation
- Coastal erosion defence
- Scour protection around bridge abutments and piers
- Culvert outfall protection
- Ditch and channel lining
- Embankment reinforcement
- Energy dissipation within sustainable drainage systems (SuDS)
