Phoenix Amenity carries two weed and feed treatments for amenity turf, and the choice mostly comes down to one question: is moss part of the problem, or is it just broadleaf weeds?

Moss as well as weeds, or weeds on their own?

Sportsmaster Renovator Pro is the triple-action option. It feeds the sward with a compound fertiliser, treats broadleaf weeds with three selective herbicides, and adds iron to knock back moss and green the turf up in the same pass. It controls Cat’s Ear, Creeping Buttercup, Daisies and White Clover well, treats Dandelions and Plantains moderately, and will not touch Common Bird’s-Foot Trefoil, Field Woodrush or Mind-your-own-business, so check the weed list against what is actually growing before relying on one application.

ICL Cleanrun Pro is the double-action option: feed plus MCPA and mecoprop-P herbicide, with no moss treatment included. Its organic-based granules break down within days rather than sitting on the surface for weeks, so nutrients reach the grass sooner and there is less risk of scorch or mower pick-up on turf that gets played on soon after treatment. It controls Plantains, Common Mouse-ear, Common Chickweed, Creeping Buttercup, Thrift and Dandelions. Tougher weeds such as Daisies, White Clover, Yarrow and Yellow Suckling Clover may need a second application 4 to 6 weeks after the first.

If moss is showing on the sward, Renovator Pro saves a separate treatment. If it is not, Cleanrun Pro’s faster-breaking granules are the more comfortable option on turf that cannot afford to be out of use for long.

When a weed and feed is the wrong tool

Both products are aimed at turf that mostly needs tidying up, not renovating. Both are described for outfields, fairways and other recreational turf rather than fine ornamental lawns, and neither is a substitute for aeration, overseeding or drainage work if the underlying problem is compaction or a thin, patchy sward rather than weeds and moss on top of otherwise healthy grass. Treat the cause first if the turf is failing for a structural reason, then use a weed and feed to keep it clean once it is growing properly.

Rate, coverage and timing

Both come as 25kg bags, both go down at 35g/m² for around 714m² of coverage per bag, and both suit application between April and September, ideally with a calibrated spreader so the rate is even across the area. These are plant protection products: read and follow the label before use, and check current authorisation status before ordering, since approvals and formulations can change.

Tell the team what is growing in the sward, whether moss is present, and roughly how many square metres need treating, and they can confirm which product and how many bags the job needs.

Frequently asked questions

Will a weed and feed treatment also kill moss?

Sportsmaster Renovator Pro will, because it includes iron alongside its fertiliser and herbicide. ICL Cleanrun Pro is feed and herbicide only and has no moss control built in, so pair it with a dedicated moss treatment if moss is present.

When should I apply weed and feed to amenity turf?

Both products are suited to application between April and September. Always read and follow the product label before use, and check current authorisation status before ordering.

Do I need to reapply weed and feed?

Some tougher weeds, such as daisies, white clover and yarrow, may not clear with a single ICL Cleanrun Pro application and can need a second treatment 4 to 6 weeks later. Check the weed list for either product against what is actually growing on site first.
