Willow Spiling & Brush Mattress
In stock
Willow spiling and brushwood mattress use live willow stakes and woven brushwood to stabilise river and stream banks without hard engineering. The stakes root into the bank and grow into a living structure that resists erosion, filters silt and gives cover to wildlife. Suited to riverbank protection, ditch and pond edge restoration, and natural flood management schemes. Get in touch for material specifications and a quote.

Willow spiling and brushwood mattress is a bioengineering technique for river and bank stabilisation: live willow stakes and woven brushwood hold a bank together and establish a living root system, instead of concrete or rock armour. Phoenix Amenity Supplies materials for spiling and mattress construction across the UK, for riverbank protection, natural flood management schemes and habitat restoration.
What are willow spiling and brushwood mattresses?
The technique combines two elements. Willow spiles are live willow stakes driven into the riverbank or shoreline in a staggered pattern. Sourced from willow varieties chosen for fast growth and rooting, the stakes establish quickly and bind the soil with a living root matrix.
The brushwood mattress is laid over the bank surface, sometimes woven through the spiling or anchored behind it, from bundles of dead or live willow branches (faggots) or similar woody material. It gives the bank an immediate protective layer, reducing scour and filtering fine sediment while the willow roots take hold underneath.
Why use it
Willow spiling and brushwood matting use renewable materials to slow water flow and reduce scour along riverbanks, lake margins and ditches. The mattress gives the bank immediate physical protection, and as the willow roots establish it becomes a self-repairing structure that reinforces the bank over time.
It also builds habitat. Growing willow gives shade and cover for fish, insects and birds, and the mattress traps sediment that marginal plants can colonise, while filtering suspended solids out of the water. Because it uses natural materials and light plant rather than heavy machinery, it can work out more cost-effective than hard engineering, and it ages into the landscape rather than sitting on top of it. The technique adapts to a range of bank profiles and flow conditions, which is why it suits many different UK river restoration projects.
Typical UK applications
- Riverbank protection
- Stream and ditch stabilisation
- Lake and pond edge restoration
- Erosion control in areas of moderate flow
- Habitat creation and enhancement for UK wildlife
- Natural flood management (NFM) schemes
- Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) enhancement
- Bioengineering solutions for waterways
