Phoenix Amenity’s back lawn grass seed mix is a hard-wearing 50/50 blend of perennial ryegrass and strong creeping red fescue, built for UK family gardens. Ryegrass establishes quickly and copes well with heavy use, while the fescue thickens the sward and helps it self-repair. Suitable for new lawns and for overseeding worn or bare patches.

Phoenix Amenity’s back lawn grass seed mix is a hard-wearing 50/50 blend of perennial ryegrass and strong creeping red fescue, built for the everyday wear of a UK family garden. It establishes fast, then thickens into a dense, self-repairing lawn that copes with children, pets and regular foot traffic. Use it to sow a new lawn or to overseed patches that have worn thin.
| Species | Proportion | Primary role |
|---|---|---|
| Amenity Perennial Ryegrass | 50% | Rapid establishment and wear tolerance |
| Strong Creeping Red Fescue | 50% | Density, fine texture and self-repair |
Each grass in this 50/50 mix does a different job: ryegrass gets the lawn established quickly, and fescue fills in behind it.
Perennial ryegrass is the workhorse of this mix. It germinates fast, usually showing green shoots within 7–10 days in favourable conditions, and forms a strong, wear-tolerant sward soon after. It also recovers well from mowing and heavy use, which is why it carries the high-traffic parts of a back garden.
The equal proportion of creeping red fescue adds density, a finer texture and better drought tolerance to the mix. Its creeping growth habit lets the lawn self-repair: it fills small bare patches and thickens the sward over time. It also tolerates a slightly lower cut, so the lawn looks tidier between mows.
12mm. Avoid cutting below this height to maintain sward density and wear tolerance.
Late summer to early autumn (August–October) is the optimum sowing window, when soil temperatures stay warm and moisture levels increase. Spring sowing (March–May) also works well where irrigation is available to support establishment.
Note: all seed in this mix is subject to availability at the time of order.
