A specialist grass seed mix for cricket squares, made from 60% Corsica and 40% Eurocordus fine-leaved perennial ryegrass. Corsica’s slow regrowth keeps the sward tight between cuts, and both cultivars tolerate close mowing and recover well from wear around the crease. The result is a dense, true surface with consistent ball bounce and pace.

Phoenix Amenity Cricket Wicket Grass Seed Mix is a specialist blend of fine-leaved perennial ryegrass cultivars for UK cricket squares. It combines two ryegrass varieties to build a dense, uniform sward that tolerates very close mowing and recovers quickly from the wear of batting and bowling, giving a firm, consistent surface for predictable ball bounce and pace. Corsica, the dominant cultivar at 60% of the mix, is chosen for its exceptionally slow regrowth: this keeps cutting heights precise with less disturbance to a prepared square.
| Species / cultivar | Proportion | Primary role |
|---|---|---|
| Corsica – Perennial Ryegrass | 60% | Slow regrowth, fine leaf texture, and close mowing performance |
| Eurocordus – Perennial Ryegrass | 40% | Fine leaf texture, recovery, and surface uniformity |
Both cultivars are fine-leaved amenity perennial ryegrasses bred for sports turf performance.
Corsica is a creeping dwarf perennial ryegrass cultivar and one of the top performers in the BSPB Turfgrass Seed 2025 L1 table for summer sports use. Its standout feature is regrowth rate: it scores 9.1 in BSPB trials, the highest slow regrowth score in the table. That matters on a cricket square, because the sward holds a precise, tight cutting height with fewer mowing passes, so there is less disturbance ahead of match preparation. Corsica’s creeping growth habit also helps it self-repair worn areas around batting creases and bowling run-ups, and it keeps its colour and sward quality well under close mowing through summer.
Eurocordus brings fine leaf texture and surface uniformity to the mix. It fills in around Corsica to produce a smooth, even playing surface with high shoot density. Between them, the two cultivars hold up well under the repeated stress of cricket play, rolling, and close mowing through the season.
12mm for routine in-season maintenance. Wickets may be cut progressively lower in the days before match play as part of pitch preparation, in line with your groundsmanship programme and local conditions.
Late summer to early autumn (August–October) is the preferred window for end-of-season renovation: it gives good establishment before winter. Spring overseeding (April–May) can address winter damage ahead of the season, though establishment depends on soil temperature and moisture conditions.
