Autumn hawkbit (now often placed in the genus Scorzoneroides) is a hardy native perennial of the daisy family. It grows from a basal rosette of narrow, deeply toothed mid-green leaves, sending up slender, sometimes branched stems topped with golden-yellow, dandelion-like flowerheads.

Autumn hawkbit (now often placed in the genus Scorzoneroides) is a hardy native perennial of the daisy family. It grows from a basal rosette of narrow, deeply toothed mid-green leaves, sending up slender, sometimes branched stems topped with golden-yellow, dandelion-like flowerheads. The outer florets are frequently flushed or streaked with reddish-bronze on their undersides, a helpful clue to its identity among similar yellow composites.
As its name suggests, it carries on flowering late, from midsummer well into autumn, making it a valuable nectar source when many meadow plants have finished. It favours open, sunny situations on moist but reasonably fertile soils and is characteristic of hay meadows, pastures, roadside verges and other grassy places, tolerating a range of conditions. Bees and other pollinators work the long-lasting blooms, and finches take the seeds. It is a dependable choice for native meadow and grassland seed mixes, especially where late-season forage is wanted.
