Anthemis arvensis L.

Common Chamomile

Corn chamomile is a low, bushy annual of the daisy family, bearing classic daisy flowers with white ray florets surrounding a domed yellow centre, held above finely divided, feathery, faintly aromatic foliage. It is a long-established cornfield plant rather than a true native, having arrived in Britain in ancient times as a weed of cultivation, and it is best described as a naturalised arable annual.

Anthemis arvensis (Common Chamomile)

About

Corn chamomile is a low, bushy annual of the daisy family, bearing classic daisy flowers with white ray florets surrounding a domed yellow centre, held above finely divided, feathery, faintly aromatic foliage. It is a long-established cornfield plant rather than a true native, having arrived in Britain in ancient times as a weed of cultivation, and it is best described as a naturalised arable annual.

It grows on disturbed, open ground such as arable field margins, waste places and roadsides, generally favouring lighter soils in full sun, and flowers through the summer months. The open, nectar-rich blooms are readily worked by bees, hoverflies and other insects. Once a common sight in cornfields, it has declined markedly with modern herbicides and changes in farming, which has made it a sought-after ingredient in cornfield annual and arable-margin seed mixes alongside poppies and corn marigold.
