Creeping bent, sometimes called fiorin, is a native perennial grass that spreads vigorously by long surface runners which root at the joints, allowing it to knit together a dense, low mat. Its leaves are flat and the flowering stems carry compact, branching heads that open out as they mature; it flowers through late spring and summer.

Creeping bent, sometimes called fiorin, is a native perennial grass that spreads vigorously by long surface runners which root at the joints, allowing it to knit together a dense, low mat. Its leaves are flat and the flowering stems carry compact, branching heads that open out as they mature; it flowers through late spring and summer.
It is common throughout Britain on damp and disturbed ground, thriving on the margins of ponds, ditches, marshes and saltmarshes as well as in lawns, paths and verges, and it tolerates wet, compacted and seasonally flooded soils in sun or light shade. Its creeping habit makes it good at binding bare or eroding ground and providing cover for small invertebrates. The same spreading vigour means it is mainly used as a turf and stabilising grass, including on sports surfaces, rather than as a meadow component, where it can crowd out finer plants.
