Shade Area Grass Seed Mix
In stock
A shade tolerant grass seed mix for lawns under trees or between buildings, where light is limited. Dwarf ryegrass establishes quickly and nurses the slower growing fescues and meadow grasses that carry the sward once established. Mow it lightly and less often than an open lawn, since infrequent cutting is what keeps a shaded sward thick and healthy.

About Shade Area Grass Seed Mix
Wherever grass has to grow under tree canopies or close to buildings, ordinary lawn mixtures thin out fast once the light drops. This shade tolerant mix is built around that problem: dwarf ryegrass establishes quickly to give early cover, then hands over to the slower growing fescues and meadow grasses that form the lasting, shade tolerant sward.
Seed mix
- 25% Perennial Rye Grass
- 10% Slender Creeping Red Fescue
- 55% Strong Creeping Red Fescue
- 5% Rough Stalked Meadow Grass
- 5% Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass
Sowing rates and mowing height
- Sowing rate on bare ground: 50g/m²
- Overseeding rate on thin areas: 30g/m²
- Mowing height: 50mm
Mow it high and space out cuts, especially through the first season while the slower fescues fill in. Frequent, close mowing is the main reason shaded lawns thin out and lose their sward over time.
