White clover is a familiar low-growing native perennial that creeps across the ground on rooting runners, forming spreading patches of trefoil leaves often marked with a pale band. Its rounded flower heads are white, frequently flushed with pink and becoming brown as they age and turn downward. Hard-wearing and resilient, it copes well with mowing and grazing, which is why it is so common in turf.
It grows almost anywhere with reasonable moisture and light, from lawns, pastures and playing fields to verges, meadows and waste ground, on a wide range of soils. Flowering from late spring through the summer, it is one of the most valuable nectar plants for honeybees and bumblebees, and as a nitrogen-fixing legume it naturally improves soil fertility. It is a standard component of pasture, lawn and pollinator seed mixes, prized for combining toughness with real value to bees.
