It is now classified under the genus Glebionis.
Long established in Britain as an ancient introduction that spread with arable cultivation, it was once an abundant weed of cornfields and is best suited to cornfield and annual wildflower mixes rather than permanent meadows. It favours light, sandy or acidic soils in full sun and on disturbed ground, flowering through summer and often into autumn. The generous yellow heads are valuable to bees, hoverflies and other pollinators, and the seed is taken by finches.
