Wetland & Wet Soil Grass Mix
In stock
A wetland-tolerant grass seed mix for flood plains, riverbanks, ditches and other UK ground that stays damp or occasionally floods. Strong Creeping Red Fescue and Tall Fescue form the backbone, rooting deeply to hold wet or heavy clay soil together, with Perennial Ryegrass added for quick early cover while the rest of the sward establishes.

About Wetland & Wet Soil Grass Mix
This wetland grass seed mix is built for ground that stays wet for some or all of the year: flood plains, riverbanks, pond margins, drainage ditches and detention basins. Standard lawn and amenity mixes tend to thin out or die back once the ground stays waterlogged. This blend is built around species that keep rooting and spreading when the soil stays damp. It suits ground that is wet, poorly draining or waterlogged at times; it will not establish in permanent standing water.
Species mix
Seven grass species make up the blend, each doing a different job in wet or heavy ground:
- 40% Strong Creeping Red Fescue: spreads by rhizome to form a dense, fine-textured sward and holds up well in moist soil.
- 30% “Turf” Tall Fescue: deep rooting, tolerant of wet and heavy soils and periods of standing water, and wears well once established.
- 15% Perennial Ryegrass: germinates and establishes quickly, giving early cover and some wear tolerance while the rest of the mix develops.
- 5% Crested Dogstail: a traditional meadow grass that copes well in a range of conditions, including damp soil, and adds density to the sward.
- 4% Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass: spreads by rhizome, which helps it recover after wear and hold density as moisture levels change.
- 3% Rough Stalked Meadow Grass: suited to damp, shaded ground, and fills gaps in the sward where moisture is consistently high.
- 3% Yorkshire Fog: a native grass tolerant of damp, poorer soils.
Where it works
This mix is suited to sites where standard turf mixes struggle with waterlogging or heavy clay, including:
- flood plain and riparian zone restoration
- riverbank and pond margin stabilisation
- drainage ditch and swale lining
- Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) areas
- detention and attenuation basins
- landfill sites and reclamation areas with wet soils
- heavy clay soils and poorly draining lawns
Why it holds up in wet ground
Tall Fescue and Strong Creeping Red Fescue both root deeply. That improves soil structure and helps the sward resist erosion on banks and verges exposed to moving water. Perennial Ryegrass gets the sward established quickly, so vulnerable wet areas gain stable cover sooner rather than being left bare while the deeper-rooting species catch up.
Sowing rate
- New areas and establishment: approximately 35-50g per square metre
- Overseeding existing turf: approximately 20-35g per square metre
