The difference between grasses and sedges

Grasses, sedges and rushes are often sold together as “ornamental grasses” because they all add texture, movement and structure to a planting scheme, along with seasonal colour and the sound of foliage moving in the wind. Most are visible year-round. As a general rule, grasses prefer sunny spots with well-drained soil, while sedges and rushes do better in shadier, damper ground.

Grasses and rushes can be annual or perennial; sedges are always perennial. Up close, the stems are the easiest way to tell them apart: sedges and rushes usually have solid stems, while grass stems are hollow. Habitat and distribution also help with identification, since each group tends to favour different site conditions.
