Pre-established coir pallets give UK wetland and waterside restoration projects a head start. Each pallet is a biodegradable mat of compressed coir (coconut fibre), pre-planted with native UK wetland species before it leaves us, so it arrives with root structure and cover already in place rather than needing a full season to establish from bare planting.
What are pre-established coir pallets?
The mats are grown on ahead of delivery with a mix of UK-native wetland plants suited to typical British wetland conditions. Because the vegetation is already rooted into the coir when it arrives, the pallets reach useful ecological function faster than planting the same area from scratch.
Benefits for wetland and waterside projects
- Established root systems bind the coir and the underlying soil from day one, which helps stabilise banks and reduce erosion on riverbanks, lake margins and attenuation ponds.
- The pre-grown cover gives immediate habitat value for insects, amphibians and birds, rather than the bare ground period that comes with fresh planting.
- A mixed planting of native wetland species supports local flora and fauna and helps the site develop a more diverse plant community.
- Wetland plants take up excess nutrients from the water, so the pallets can help improve water quality over time.
- Coir is a renewable, biodegradable material. It breaks down gradually and adds organic matter to the soil as it does so.
- Pallets are straightforward to position and secure on site, and because planting is already established, they generally need less weeding and aftercare than bare-root planting.
Typical UK applications
- River and stream bank stabilisation
- Lake and pond edge restoration
- Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS): swales, basins and retention ponds
- Reedbed creation and enhancement
- Mitigation and compensation schemes
- Biodiversity offsetting projects
- Habitat creation for amphibians, insects and birds
