Yellow oat-grass is a graceful native perennial that forms loose tufts of soft, often slightly hairy, greyish-green leaves. In early summer it sends up fine stems carrying delicate, branched, oat-like panicles. These flowerheads are green at first but ripen to a glowing golden-yellow, the small glistening spikelets giving the plant the alternative name of golden oat-grass and a distinctive shimmer in the meadow.
It grows on well-drained neutral and base-rich soils, and is especially characteristic of chalk and limestone grassland, downland, hay meadows, banks and road verges. Typically present in modest amounts rather than dominating, it is a classic 'fine' grass of old, species-rich swards and a valued ingredient in calcareous and traditional meadow seed mixes. Palatable to grazing stock but sensitive to heavy trampling, it thrives where management is gentle, and its airy seedheads add structure and food for the invertebrates of flower-rich grassland.
