About
Sea mayweed is a native plant of the daisy family found around Britain's coasts, growing as a perennial or sometimes biennial. It typically forms several sprawling or trailing stems clothed in finely divided, feathery leaves. The leaves are noticeably fleshy, a sign of its salt tolerance and a key feature separating it from the closely related inland scentless mayweed. Its daisy flowers are quite large, with white rays around a yellow centre, and the foliage is essentially scentless.
It is a true coastal specialist, colonising shingle beaches, open sand, sea cliffs, walls and disturbed ground influenced by salt spray, and is often abundant around seabird colonies. Thriving in well-drained, sandy and saline soils in full sun, it flowers freely through the summer months and provides nectar and pollen for coastal insects. Its resilience in exposed, salt-laden conditions makes it a natural choice for seaside and coastal planting schemes.
