Sea campion is a low, cushion-forming native perennial of the coast, thriving on cliff ledges, shingle beaches and rocky shores around much of Britain. It builds tufts of fleshy, blue-green leaves that hug the ground and tolerate salt spray, wind and thin, sharply drained soil. From these mats rise short stems bearing solitary white flowers, each set against a distinctive swollen, bladder-like calyf that is often flushed with pink or purple veining.
Flowering through late spring and summer, the blooms attract bees and other pollinating insects, and the trailing, mat-forming habit makes the plant valuable for binding loose coastal ground. Its toughness and neat appearance also lend it well to rock gardens, gravel plantings, green roofs and free-draining containers. In coastal and maritime seed mixes it is a dependable choice for exposed, sunny sites where many other plants struggle.
