White stonecrop is a low, mat-forming succulent that creeps across walls, rocks, roofs, shingle and other dry, open ground. Long established in Britain but considered an introduction rather than a true native, it has naturalised widely and is also much grown in gardens.

White stonecrop is a low, mat-forming succulent that creeps across walls, rocks, roofs, shingle and other dry, open ground. Long established in Britain but considered an introduction rather than a true native, it has naturalised widely and is also much grown in gardens. Its small, plump, cylindrical leaves are bright green, often tinged red in strong sun and drought, and store water that lets the plant endure thin soils and baking conditions.
In summer it throws up branched flower heads of tiny, five-petalled white stars, sometimes pink-flushed, which are popular with bees, hoverflies and other small pollinators. Drought-proof and undemanding, it spreads by rooting stems to form dense evergreen carpets. These qualities make it a mainstay of green roofs, living walls, rock gardens, gravel plantings and any free-draining sunny site where little else will knit together.
