Wild mignonette is a bushy, much-branched native plant, usually behaving as a biennial or short-lived perennial. It forms a leafy clump of crinkled, pinnately lobed foliage and sends up many slender, conical spikes of small, star-like flowers. The blooms are pale greenish-yellow with finely divided petals, and although individually modest they are carried in such numbers that the whole plant has a soft, frothy appearance.
It is a plant of dry, open and disturbed ground, favouring chalk and limestone soils, and is most often seen on waste places, quarries, banks, arable margins and road verges in full sun. It is widespread but rather scattered, being commonest in southern and eastern England. Flowering through summer into early autumn, its nectar-rich spikes are excellent for bees and other pollinators, which makes it a worthwhile component of pollinator and calcareous grassland seed mixes. Its leaves and flowers have long been used to produce a yellow dye.
