The primrose is one of Britain's best-known native perennials and a true herald of spring. It forms a low rosette of crinkled, fresh green, tongue-shaped leaves, from which the flowers rise singly on slender, softly hairy stalks. Each pale, soft-yellow bloom has five notched petals and a deeper yellow centre, and carries a delicate fragrance; flowering often begins very early in the year and can continue well into spring.
It favours cool, moist, humus-rich ground in dappled shade, growing in deciduous woodland, along hedge banks, on shady road verges and in damp grassland throughout much of the country. A classic plant for naturalising in woodland-edge and shade-tolerant wildflower schemes, it knits well with bluebells, wood anemone and violets. As an early-flowering species it provides valuable nectar and pollen for emerging bees, hoverflies and other spring insects, including some early-flying butterflies and moths.
