Evergreen or perennial candytuft is a low, spreading subshrub of the cabbage family, native to southern Europe rather than to Britain. As its name suggests, it keeps its narrow, dark glossy-green leaves through the year, forming dense, weed-suppressing mounds that in spring are smothered in rounded heads of crisp white flowers.

As its name suggests, it keeps its narrow, dark glossy-green leaves through the year, forming dense, weed-suppressing mounds that in spring are smothered in rounded heads of crisp white flowers.
It is an undemanding plant for sunny, free-draining sites, doing especially well on rock gardens, dry walls, gravel and along the front edge of borders, where it can tumble attractively over stone. It tolerates poor, alkaline soils and copes well with drought once established. The spring flush of bloom is a useful early draw for bees and other pollinators, and a light trim afterwards keeps the cushions compact and may encourage a second, lighter flush. A reliable and long-lived ornamental, it is grown for its evergreen structure and dependable spring display rather than as a wildflower.
