Its bright green leaves are divided into three toothed leaflets, and in spring and summer it produces small white five-petalled flowers with a boss of yellow stamens.

Wild strawberry, or woodland strawberry, is a low-growing native perennial of the rose family that spreads by slender runners to form spreading patches. Its bright green leaves are divided into three toothed leaflets, and in spring and summer it produces small white five-petalled flowers with a boss of yellow stamens. These are followed by tiny, deep red, edible strawberries that are far smaller than the cultivated kind but intensely sweet and aromatic.
It grows in woodland edges and clearings, on hedge banks, grassy slopes and scrubby ground, generally on well-drained soils in sun or dappled shade. The early flowers offer nectar and pollen to bees and other insects, while the fruits are taken by birds and small mammals which help disperse the seed. Its low, creeping habit makes it a charming ground-covering plant for shadier corners, woodland-edge planting and informal wildlife areas.
