Dropwort is a native perennial of the rose family and the dry-ground counterpart to its close relative meadowsweet. It forms a low rosette of distinctive, finely cut, fern-like leaves from which rise slender stems bearing loose heads of flowers.

Dropwort is a native perennial of the rose family and the dry-ground counterpart to its close relative meadowsweet. It forms a low rosette of distinctive, finely cut, fern-like leaves from which rise slender stems bearing loose heads of flowers. The buds are flushed pink and open to creamy-white, six-petalled blooms, giving the flowerhead a delicate two-toned effect through early and midsummer.
Unlike meadowsweet it is a plant of dry, well-drained ground, growing on chalk and limestone grassland and downland, mostly in southern and eastern England where it can be locally abundant. It enjoys full sun and lime-rich soils, and its swollen root tubers help it endure dry spells. The flowers are visited by a range of bees and other insects. As an attractive, drought-tolerant species it is a valuable addition to calcareous grassland and wildflower meadow mixes on thin, chalky soils.
