Upright brome is a robust, densely tufted perennial grass native to Britain, most at home on the chalk and limestone of southern England. It forms tussocks of stiff, narrow, often inrolled leaves and sends up tall, erect stems carrying narrow, somewhat one-sided panicles of long, slender spikelets, typically flowering through June and July and fading to straw colour as the seed sets.

It forms tussocks of stiff, narrow, often inrolled leaves and sends up tall, erect stems carrying narrow, somewhat one-sided panicles of long, slender spikelets, typically flowering through June and July and fading to straw colour as the seed sets.
It is a characteristic grass of dry, infertile calcareous downland, road verges and banks, thriving in sun on free-draining lime-rich soils. Where grazing or cutting relaxes it can spread strongly and form dense stands, so on species-rich downland it is usually kept in check by management; in the right place, though, it is a valuable structural component of chalk and limestone grassland mixes. Its tussocks and standing seedheads offer shelter and food for grassland invertebrates and small birds.
