About
Thrift, also known as sea pink, is a native evergreen perennial that grows as a dense, low cushion of fine, grass-like leaves. From this neat mound rise slim, leafless stalks, each topped with a rounded head of small flowers in bright rose-pink, occasionally paler or white. It is one of the classic plants of the British coastline, flowering mainly from late spring into summer and often carpeting the ground in drifts.
Its natural homes are sea cliffs, rocky shores, saltmarsh edges and short coastal turf, and it also grows on some mountains, thriving in full sun on poor, free-draining or salty ground where little else competes. The nectar-rich flower heads attract bees, butterflies and other insects. Tough, drought-tolerant and tidy in habit, it is a long-established favourite for rock gardens, gravel gardens, coastal planting and the front of sunny borders, as well as for seaside wildlife schemes.
