The Vigilis Hedge Wrap is a recyclable, twin-walled wrap that fits around individual hedgerow plants, young shrubs and tree stems. It guards against rabbit and hare browsing, herbicide drift and strimmer damage. Also called a spiral guard, it opens to fit in seconds, needs no stake and expands as the plant grows, so it never constricts the stem. Made with up to 30% recycled polypropylene, it installs quickly on large hedgerow schemes because no stake is needed. Full manufacturer specifications are on the Vigilis Hedge Wrap product page.
Fast, stake-free protection for hedgerow and boundary planting
The Vigilis Hedge Wrap is built for slim, single-stemmed hedging whips rather than tree tubes or wide shrub guards. The wrap opens to fit around the stem and expands as the plant thickens, so it avoids the constriction a fixed tube can cause. Because no stake is needed, it installs quickly across high-volume schemes: hedgerow creation and restoration, farm and boundary hedging, mixed native hedge planting and garden hedges.
- Wraps around the stem and stands on its own without a stake; add an optional bamboo cane for support on exposed sites or taller plants.
- Opens out as the stem thickens, so it never constricts the developing plant.
- Guards establishing plants against rabbit and hare browsing, herbicide drift and accidental strimmer damage.
- Has a slim 45–60mm diameter suited to young hedging plants and bare-root whips.
- Contains up to 30% recycled UV-stabilised polypropylene and is returnable through the Vigilis Protect, Collect, Recycle scheme.
- Is green to support light transmission, passing over 20% blue and over 35% red light across the 400–700nm range.
Which size do I need?
All three heights share the same 45–60mm diameter, so choose the height to match the browsing threat on site.

How to install a Vigilis hedge wrap
Open the wrap and place it around the plant stem, putting the inner fold on the outside as you close it to hold the diameter. No stake is needed, but on exposed sites or for taller plants you can add a bamboo cane and secure the wrap loosely so it can still expand. Check wraps each year and remove the recyclable wrap once the plant is established, typically after three to five years, returning it through the Vigilis Protect, Collect, Recycle scheme before it could constrict the stem. Store wraps undercover in dry conditions and out of direct sunlight before use, kept upright with nothing heavy on top.
Choosing across the Vigilis range
This page covers the recyclable hedge wrap. If revisiting the site to collect guards is impractical, the soil-biodegradable Vigilis Bio Hedge Wrap offers the same stake-free protection and breaks down in the soil once the plant is established. For multi-stemmed hedgerow plants and native shrubs that need a wider profile guard rather than a spiral wrap, see the Vigilis Shrub Shelter and Vigilis Bio Shrub Shelter. For single-stem trees, the Vigilis Standard Tree Shelter and Vigilis Bio Tree Shelter cover the full range.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hedge wrap and how is it different from a tree shelter?
A hedge wrap, also called a spiral guard, is a lightweight wrap that fits loosely around an individual plant stem and expands as it grows. Unlike a rigid tree tube, it needs no stake and is quicker and cheaper to install at scale. Tube shelters give greater protection and a stronger microclimate for single trees; wraps are ideal for high-volume hedgerow planting where light, fast, stem-level protection is what’s needed.
Do Vigilis hedge wraps need a stake?
No. A stake is optional rather than required. On exposed sites or for taller plants a bamboo cane adds stability; secure the wrap loosely to the cane so it can still move and expand as the plant grows.
Which species are hedge wraps suitable for?
They suit single-stemmed hedgerow and woodland-edge species including hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, field maple, hornbeam, spindle and dogwood. They are not suited to very bushy, multi-stemmed plants from the outset. For those, use the Vigilis Shrub Shelter or Shrub Shelter XL.
How long should a hedge wrap stay on the plant?
Check recyclable wraps annually and remove them once the plant is established, typically after three to five years, before the material begins to constrict the stem. Removed wraps can be returned through the Vigilis Protect, Collect, Recycle scheme. Where revisiting to collect guards is impractical, the soil-biodegradable Vigilis Bio Hedge Wrap degrades in place with no removal required.
How many hedge wraps come in a box?
Vigilis Hedge Wraps are nested in 3s and supplied in boxes of 105, suiting large hedgerow schemes as well as smaller boundary and garden projects.
