Vigilis Shrub Shelter
In stock
The Vigilis Shrub Shelter is a rigid, recyclable guard with a shorter, wider profile than a standard tree tube. It protects shrubs, hedgerow plants and conifers from rabbits and hares, and leaves room for the bushy, multi-stemmed growth that a narrow tube would restrict. Made with up to 30% recycled polypropylene, it lasts six years or more. Available in Standard and XL diameters, supplied in multiples of 20.

The Vigilis Shrub Shelter is a rigid, twin-walled, recyclable guard built for shrubs, hedgerow plants and conifers rather than single-stem tree whips. Its wider diameter gives naturally bushy, multi-stemmed species room to establish, so it protects them from rabbit and hare browsing without the constriction a narrow tree tube would cause. Made with up to 30% recycled polypropylene, it is fully recyclable at end of life and lasts six years or more. Phoenix Amenity is the UK distributor for Vigilis shrub shelters and stocks the full range. If you are guarding single-stem whips instead, see the Vigilis Standard Tree Shelter.
Wider shrub protection for hedgerow plants and conifers
Unlike a narrow tube-style tree shelter built around a single straight whip, this shrub guard (effectively a hedgerow guard for bushy planting) has a wider profile that accommodates the bushy, multi-stemmed growth of native shrubs and hedgerow species such as hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, dog rose, dogwood, guelder rose, elder and field maple. It protects establishing plants from rabbits and hares without restricting the lateral growth that makes these species valuable for hedgerows and wildlife habitat. Growers use it for hedgerow creation and restoration, farm wildlife and agri-environment schemes, agroforestry shelterbelts, rewilding and landscaping. Browse the full range on the tree and shrub guards category page.
- Wider profile accommodates multi-stemmed shrubs and hedgerow plants where a narrow tree tube would constrict natural lateral growth.
- Two sizes: Standard (130–160mm) for single-stemmed hedgerow whips, XL (160–200mm) for broader, bushier species that need more room to establish.
- Up to 30% recycled content cuts virgin plastic use without compromising strength or UV stability.
- UV-stabilised polypropylene recycles fully once the plant is established.
- A green tube tuned for healthy photomorphogenesis, transmitting over 20% blue and over 35% red light across the 400–700nm range.
- A break line guards against stem strangulation and a flared rim minimises abrasion as the plant grows.
- Pre-fitted releasable cable ties make installation, inspection and removal straightforward.
Which shrub shelter size do I need?
Choose the size to match the plant’s growth habit, then choose the height to match the browsing pressure. Both sizes come in 0.6m and 0.75m heights.

How to install a Vigilis shrub shelter
- Slide the shelter over the shrub or hedgerow plant after planting.
- Drive a stake in alongside the guard, not through the rootball.
- Secure the shelter to the stake using the pre-fitted releasable ties.
The ties release easily, so you can check the plant through the season and remove the guard for recycling once the shrub is established. Store shelters undercover in dry conditions and out of direct sunlight, kept upright with nothing heavy stacked on top.
Recyclable or biodegradable? Choosing across the Vigilis range
This page covers the recyclable shrub guard. If collecting guards after establishment is impractical, the soil-biodegradable Vigilis Bio Shrub Shelter gives the same wider profile protection and biodegrades in place, so there is no need to retrieve it. For hedgerow whips and single-stemmed hedging plants where a spiral guard suits better than a rigid shelter, the Vigilis Hedge Wrap and Vigilis Bio Hedge Wrap offer stake-free protection in three heights. For single-stem trees, the Vigilis Standard Tree Shelter and Vigilis Bio Tree Shelter are the right choices.
Frequently asked questions
What is a shrub shelter used for?
A shrub shelter is a shorter, wider guard that protects low-growing native shrubs, hedgerow species and conifers from rabbit and hare browsing during establishment. Its wider profile suits bushy, multi-stemmed growth rather than single-stem tree whips, which makes it well suited to hedgerow creation, farm wildlife schemes, agroforestry shelterbelts and rewilding projects.
What is the difference between a shrub shelter and a tree shelter?
A tree shelter is a narrow tube designed around a single straight whip. A shrub shelter is shorter and wider, giving multi-stemmed shrubs and hedgerow plants room to develop their natural bushy form while still protecting them from low browsing. Choose a shrub shelter for hedging and native shrub planting, and a tree shelter for single-stem trees, especially where deer are present.
What is the difference between the Standard and XL shrub shelter?
The XL has a larger internal diameter (160–200mm) than the Standard (130–160mm), giving bushier or spreading species more room to establish. Choose the Standard for single-stemmed hedgerow whips such as hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel and field maple, and the XL for broader species, or where you want to allow more lateral growth within the guard.
Which species are shrub shelters suitable for?
They suit many native shrubs and hedgerow species, including hawthorn, blackthorn, dog rose, guelder rose, dogwood, hazel, elder and field maple. You can also use them for conifers where rabbit pressure is present. For mixed-species hedgerow planting, you can combine Standard and XL sizes within the same scheme.
Do shrub shelters protect against deer?
No. Shrub shelters are designed for rabbit and hare protection. Where deer are present, use a taller tree shelter or mesh guard at the appropriate height for the species, or plant within a deer-fenced enclosure.
Are Vigilis shrub shelters recyclable?
Yes. The shelter uses UV-stabilised polypropylene with up to 30% recycled content and is fully recyclable at the end of its working life. For schemes where collection after establishment is impractical, the soil-biodegradable Vigilis Bio Shrub Shelter is also available.
