Zinnia angustifolia Kunth
Little star
Narrowleaf zinnia is a bushy, free-flowering member of the daisy family native to northern and western Mexico, grown in Britain as a half-hardy bedding annual rather than as a wildflower. As its name suggests, it has slim, pointed leaves on neat, spreading plants that become smothered in single, daisy-like flowerheads, most often in warm shades of orange, gold and white, each with a small contrasting central eye.
About
Narrowleaf zinnia is a bushy, free-flowering member of the daisy family native to northern and western Mexico, grown in Britain as a half-hardy bedding annual rather than as a wildflower. As its name suggests, it has slim, pointed leaves on neat, spreading plants that become smothered in single, daisy-like flowerheads, most often in warm shades of orange, gold and white, each with a small contrasting central eye.
It performs best in a sunny, sheltered spot on free-draining soil and is well suited to borders, containers and gravel plantings. Once established it is notably tolerant of heat and drought and tends to resist the mildew that can trouble larger-flowered zinnias. Blooming continuously from summer until the first frosts, the abundant flowers are readily worked by bees and butterflies. It is best described as an easy, long-flowering cultivated annual for pollinator-friendly summer displays rather than a British native.
