About

Garden verbena is a cultivated bedding plant rather than a wild species, a complex hybrid raised for its long-lasting, vividly coloured flowers. It forms low, bushy or trailing growth with rough, oblong, toothed leaves, and carries flattened, rounded clusters of small five-lobed blooms held just above the foliage. The flowers come in a wide range of shades, from reds, pinks and purples to blues and whites, often with a contrasting pale eye.

It is half-hardy and tender in the British climate, so it is usually grown as an annual, sown or planted out after the risk of frost has passed and flowering through summer into autumn. It needs full sun, free-draining soil and warmth to perform well, and is a popular choice for containers, hanging baskets, window boxes and the front of summer borders. The nectar-rich flowers are attractive to butterflies and bees, but as a garden hybrid it is not a native wildflower.
