Sulphur clover is a handsome native perennial clover, scarce in Britain and very much a speciality of East Anglia. It carries dense, rounded heads of soft creamy pale-yellow flowers, an unusual colour among our clovers, above clumps of dark green trifoliate leaves on upright stems.

Sulphur clover is a handsome native perennial clover, scarce in Britain and very much a speciality of East Anglia. It carries dense, rounded heads of soft creamy pale-yellow flowers, an unusual colour among our clovers, above clumps of dark green trifoliate leaves on upright stems. Once a characteristic plant of old meadows and pastures, it has declined sharply as grassland has been ploughed or agriculturally improved.
Today it survives mainly on the chalky boulder-clays of the eastern counties, clinging on along protected road verges, green lanes, railway banks and the few remaining unimproved grasslands, flowering in early to midsummer around June and July. The flowers are valuable to bumblebees and other foraging insects. Because of its specific soil preferences and conservation interest, it is best used in calcareous meadow restoration and verge enhancement within its natural range rather than as a general-purpose meadow plant.
