Erect Hedgeparsley

Upright hedge-parsley is a native annual or biennial of the carrot family, often the last of the familiar white hedgerow umbellifers to bloom. About

Upright hedge-parsley is a native annual or biennial of the carrot family, often the last of the familiar white hedgerow umbellifers to bloom. It has a stiff, branching, roughly hairy stem and greyish, twice-divided leaves, carrying small umbels of tiny flowers that are creamy white, frequently flushed with pink. It can grow tall, commonly reaching well over a metre in good conditions.

It grows on dry, neutral to base-rich soils along hedge banks, woodland edges, rough grassland and roadside verges, flowering from midsummer into early autumn after the cow parsley and hogweed have finished. The open flower heads attract hoverflies, small beetles and other insects, and the bristly fruits readily catch in fur and clothing to spread the seed. Its later flowering makes it a useful way to extend the season in hedgerow and field-margin seed mixes.
