Autumn hawkbit is a native perennial of grassy places, forming a rosette of narrow, deeply lobed leaves from which branched, slightly scaly stems rise to carry bright golden-yellow dandelion-like flowerheads. The outer florets are often tinged reddish or greyish beneath, and the heads close in dull weather.

Autumn hawkbit is a native perennial of grassy places, forming a rosette of narrow, deeply lobed leaves from which branched, slightly scaly stems rise to carry bright golden-yellow dandelion-like flowerheads. The outer florets are often tinged reddish or greyish beneath, and the heads close in dull weather. Its great value lies in its season: it keeps flowering long after most meadow flowers are finished.
Widespread throughout Britain, it grows in a broad range of open habitats, from damp and dry unimproved grassland, meadows and pastures to moorland, heaths, hedge banks, verges, quarries and waste ground, tolerating both full sun and light shade. Flowering from around June well into October, it is a particularly important late source of nectar and pollen for bees, hoverflies and other flies, and for late-flying butterflies. This reliable, easy-going native is an excellent addition to wildflower meadows and grassland mixes where extended, season-stretching forage is wanted.
