Rough meadow-grass is a common native perennial grass that spreads by short, leafy runners (stolons) to form loose, often extensive patches. The flat leaves are soft and bright green, and the stem and leaf sheaths feel slightly rough to the touch, which gives the plant its name. In early summer it produces open, spreading, pyramidal panicles of small greenish spikelets on slender stems, creating a fine, feathery flowerhead.
It favours moist, fertile ground and is found throughout Britain in damp meadows, pastures, ditches, woodland rides, marshy places and shadier corners of lawns and amenity turf, tolerating both sun and partial shade. Quick to establish, it is widely used in grass-seed mixtures and adds a fine-textured component to swards, though on rich, damp sites it can become vigorous. As a widespread grassland species it offers forage, ground cover and seed for a range of insects, birds and small mammals.
