Wood meadow-grass is a slender, loosely tufted native perennial that, unusually for the meadow-grasses, thrives in shade. It has fine, soft, bright green leaves held almost at right angles to the stem, and in summer produces delicate, open, nodding panicles of small spikelets that give the plant a light, airy appearance as it sways in the slightest breeze.

Wood meadow-grass is a slender, loosely tufted native perennial that, unusually for the meadow-grasses, thrives in shade. It has fine, soft, bright green leaves held almost at right angles to the stem, and in summer produces delicate, open, nodding panicles of small spikelets that give the plant a light, airy appearance as it sways in the slightest breeze.
As its name suggests, it is a plant of woodland: shady banks, hedgerows, the floor and edges of broadleaved woods, and other cool, sheltered spots, often on moister, humus-rich soils. This tolerance of low light makes it one of the few grasses worth including in shade-tolerant lawn and amenity seed mixes for woodland glades or beneath trees, where many turf grasses fail. In semi-natural settings it adds to the green understorey of woods and provides late-season grazing and cover for wildlife.
