Unusually for its genus it tolerates drier ground, and it is the only British water-dropwort regularly found away from wet places.

Corky-fruited water-dropwort is a native British perennial of the carrot family, most at home in the old hay meadows and grazed pastures of southern England, with strongholds in Somerset, Dorset and Hampshire. Unusually for its genus it tolerates drier ground, and it is the only British water-dropwort regularly found away from wet places. Upright and hairless, it produces solid, strongly grooved stems and finely divided leaves, topped with neat, domed umbels of small white flowers that give way to the distinctive thickened, corky-based fruits behind its name.
It grows in sun or light shade on a range of grassland soils, both damp and dry. Flowering through early to late summer, its flat flower heads draw a variety of pollinating insects, and it is a characteristic component of species-rich, traditionally managed meadows. It is a valuable addition to wildflower meadow mixes for southern and south-western Britain, where it thrives under low-intensity grazing or hay cutting.
