About

Musk mallow is an attractive, bushy perennial native to Britain and much of Europe. It forms clumps of upright stems with deeply cut, finely divided leaves that give the plant a soft, ferny look and release a faint musky scent when handled. Through the summer it bears a long succession of large, saucer-shaped flowers in clear soft pink, occasionally white, each with five notched petals around a central column of stamens.

It grows in grassy, sunny places such as meadows, road verges, hedge banks and field edges, on well-drained soils, and tolerates a range of conditions provided the ground is not waterlogged. The open, pollen- and nectar-rich flowers are popular with bees and other insects. Easy and free-flowering, it sits well in cottage-style and wildlife borders and in meadow and grassland seed mixes, where its pink blooms stand out among grasses and other native perennials.
