It has erect, square stems and deeply cut, jaggedly toothed leaves that give it a slightly nettle-like look, and it carries small, pale flowers clustered tightly in the leaf axils through summer and into autumn.

It has erect, square stems and deeply cut, jaggedly toothed leaves that give it a slightly nettle-like look, and it carries small, pale flowers clustered tightly in the leaf axils through summer and into autumn. Despite belonging to the mint family, it has little scent.
It is a plant of wet places, growing along the margins of rivers, ponds, ditches and canals, in marshes, fens and wet meadows, in damp soil and full sun to light shade. The small flowers are visited by bees and other insects, and the plant provides cover and structure at the water's edge. It is well suited to pond and bog-garden plantings and to wetland and riparian seed mixes where a robust, moisture-loving native is wanted.
