Maltese cross is an upright cottage-garden perennial in the pink family, named for the vivid scarlet flowers whose five notched petals form a distinct cross shape. These are gathered into rounded, domed clusters at the top of tall, leafy stems, creating bold blocks of colour in the summer border. It is a cultivated species native to eastern Europe and Asia rather than a British wildflower, and is sometimes listed under the genus Silene.
It grows best in moist but well-drained, fertile soil in full sun or light shade, and benefits from support as the stems can flop. Flowering in summer, its bright heads are attractive to bees and butterflies. A long-standing favourite of traditional and informal plantings, it works well in mixed borders and pollinator gardens where its strong colour can be used as a focal point.
