Round-leaved fluellen is the close companion of sharp-leaved fluellen — another small, creeping annual of the plantain family and likewise an archaeophyte of cultivated ground. As its name suggests, the difference lies in the foliage: its leaves are rounded to oval rather than pointed, and its flower stalks are hairy where the other's are smooth.

Round-leaved fluellen is the close companion of sharp-leaved fluellen — another small, creeping annual of the plantain family and likewise an archaeophyte of cultivated ground. As its name suggests, the difference lies in the foliage: its leaves are rounded to oval rather than pointed, and its flower stalks are hairy where the other's are smooth. The little snapdragon-like flowers combine a yellow throat with deep purple, and the whole softly hairy plant sprawls over bare soil.
It grows in much the same places — arable field edges, stubbles, tracks and waste ground — and is firmly tied to calcareous soils. In Britain it is a southern plant, common only in the warmer counties of England, rare beyond Lincolnshire, very limited in Wales and absent from Ireland. Flowering from July to October, it extends the foraging season for small bees, and like its relative it belongs in late-flowering arable and cornfield-conservation seed mixes on chalk and lime.
