Yellow flag is a bold, robust native iris of wet ground, forming spreading clumps from stout creeping rhizomes. Its tall, sword-shaped leaves stand erect with a pronounced central rib, and in early summer it lifts large, bright yellow flowers, the falls often marked with darker veining or a brownish flush.

Yellow flag is a bold, robust native iris of wet ground, forming spreading clumps from stout creeping rhizomes. Its tall, sword-shaped leaves stand erect with a pronounced central rib, and in early summer it lifts large, bright yellow flowers, the falls often marked with darker veining or a brownish flush. The blooms are followed by big green seed capsules that split to reveal stacks of flattened seeds.
It grows in shallow water and saturated ground at the edges of ponds, lakes, rivers, ditches, marshes and wet woodland, tolerating sun or partial shade and thriving in fertile, permanently moist or waterlogged soils. The flowers offer nectar to long-tongued bees, while the dense stands shelter aquatic insects, amphibians and other wetland wildlife and help bind soft margins. It is a striking, easy plant for wildlife ponds and damp areas, though its vigour means it needs room and can dominate small or still waters.
