Helichrysum bracteatum (Vent.) Andrews

Annual Everlasting-flower

Strawflower, or golden everlasting, is a daisy-family plant best known for its papery, straw-textured bracts that surround the central flowerhead and feel crisp and dry even when fresh. These stiff bracts come in warm shades of yellow, orange, red, pink and white, and because they hold their colour so well the blooms are a classic choice for drying.

About

Strawflower, or golden everlasting, is a daisy-family plant best known for its papery, straw-textured bracts that surround the central flowerhead and feel crisp and dry even when fresh. These stiff bracts come in warm shades of yellow, orange, red, pink and white, and because they hold their colour so well the blooms are a classic choice for drying. The plant is now usually classified as Xerochrysum bracteatum.

It is not a British wildflower but a cultivated ornamental native to Australia, most often grown here as a half-hardy annual. It does best in full sun on light, well-drained soil and flowers over a long season from summer into autumn. The flowerheads attract bees, hoverflies and other insects, and the species is widely included in cut-flower and everlasting seed mixes as well as in bright, mixed annual plantings.
