It is a long-established arrival in Britain, having spread here in ancient times as a weed of arable land, so it belongs with cornfield annuals rather than permanent grassland. It prefers light, sandy or acidic soils in full sun and on freshly disturbed ground, flowering through the summer and often into autumn. Its golden heads are a good source of pollen and nectar for bees and hoverflies, while finches take the ripening seed, and it is a popular ingredient of cornfield and annual wildflower seed mixes.
