About
Wood crane's-bill is a native British perennial of the cooler, wetter north, forming upright clumps of deeply cut, lobed leaves topped by clusters of saucer-shaped flowers in violet-blue to purple, each with a paler, whitish centre. It is one of the signature flowers of traditional upland hay meadows.
Its British stronghold is in northern England and Scotland, where it grows in damp meadows, open woodland, shady road verges, stream sides and mountain grassland, generally on moist, fertile soils. Flowering in early summer, around June and July, the bright blooms are a valuable nectar and pollen source for bees and hoverflies. It is an excellent choice for northern and upland-style meadow mixes, damp grassland and lightly shaded borders, where it brings strong colour and an authentic note of the hay-meadow flora to cooler, moister gardens and restoration schemes.
