About
Hedgerow crane's-bill is a softly hairy perennial geranium that grows from a central rosette into a branching, somewhat sprawling plant up to around half a metre tall. Its rounded leaves are divided into broad lobes, and from late spring through summer it produces a long succession of small flowers, typically purplish-pink with notched petals, occasionally paler. Though modest in size, the flowers keep coming over many weeks.
Its native range lies in the mountains of southern Europe, including the Pyrenees, and in Britain it is best regarded as a naturalised or introduced species rather than a true native, even if it has been established here for a long time and is now fairly common in England and Wales. Look for it along roadside verges, hedge banks, grassy waysides and rough ground. The plentiful flowers are visited by bees and hoverflies, making it a useful, easy-going filler for informal grassy edges and wildlife-friendly planting where its non-native status is not a concern.
