Geranium lucidum (Shining Crane's-bill)

About

Shining crane's-bill is a delicate native British annual that takes its name from its glossy, almost lacquered foliage. The rounded, lobed leaves are bright green, often flushed crimson, especially in autumn or on stressed plants, and the slender reddish stems carry small, clear pink flowers with neat, rounded petals.

It favours shaded and partly shaded places, frequently on or beside walls, rocks, hedge banks and stony ground, and is particularly associated with limestone and other base-rich substrates. Flowering from late spring through summer, roughly May to August, its little flowers draw small bees and hoverflies. Tolerant of dry, poor and rocky conditions, it is a charming self-seeder for shady walls, gravel, rockeries and the bases of hedges, where its shining leaves and tidy habit make it an attractive, low-key filler rather than a meadow plant.
